Town of Cameron awarded $400,000 in housing rehabilitation funds
As part of an ongoing effort to improve the quality of life for its residents, the Town of Cameron was awarded $400,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) housing rehabilitation funding from the Housing Trust Fund Corporation (HTFC) and the Office of Community Renewal (OCR). The funding will be made available to qualifying residents in need of housing rehabilitation with the intent being to protect their health, safety, and welfare.
OCR has awarded more than $11 million as part of this CDBG funding round for a variety of projects that address local affordable housing needs. These investments in homeownership opportunities and home rehabilitation programs will contribute to community revitalization and improved quality of life for the families of New York State. Bob Manley, Town Supervisor, said of the award and project “This is an excellent opportunity for qualifying residents of Cameron to improve their living conditions.”
In 2019, a steering committee comprised of Town Board Members, staff, and interested Town residents began examining living conditions in Cameron, a predominately low-to-moderate income rural community with aging housing stock. Using previous CDBG funding, the committee, together with the help of Southern Tier Regional Planning and Development Board (STC) (the local development agency for both the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Economic Development Administration) conducted a housing needs assessment for all residential structures in the Town. Using the information from this assessment, the Town applied for and was awarded the housing rehabilitation funding in December 2021.
